Local Government

Local Governments are comprised of elected Councils. They manage and provide essential services and infrastructure to their local communities.

They are responsible for things that directly affect daily life, such as:

  • Maintaining local roads, parks, and public spaces.
  • Waste collection and management.
  • Managing local libraries, community centres, and recreational facilities.
  • Planning and development approvals (local land use and building controls).
  • Environmental protection and sustainability initiatives.
  • Supporting local events, culture, and tourism.

If your issue is in the following list, you need to contact Cumberland Council or Parramatta Council

Federal Government

Australia’s federal government is responsible for governing the country at the national level. It plays a key role in shaping policies, passing laws, and delivering services that affect all Australians. Headquartered in Canberra, the federal government is made up of the Parliament (the House of Representatives and the Senate), the Executive (including the Prime Minister and Cabinet), and the Judiciary.

The federal government is primarily responsible for:

  • National Defence and Security – Maintaining the Australian Defence Force and overseeing national security and foreign affairs.

  • Economy and Finance – Managing the national budget, taxation, trade, and economic policy.

  • Social Services – Funding and regulating Medicare, Centrelink, aged pensions, and other welfare systems.

  • Immigration and Citizenship – Controlling who enters and stays in the country, including visas and citizenship applications.

  • Environmental Policy – Addressing national and international environmental concerns, including climate change strategies and natural disaster response.

  • Education and Health Funding – Providing funding and national policy direction for schools, universities, hospitals, and public health initiatives.
